Atrial Fibrillation (also known as AFib) is a cardiovascular condition that results in poor blood flow and an irregular heartbeat. This condition is relatively common, especially in people over the age of 40. The condition occurs when the upper chambers of the heart beat out of sync with the lower chambers.
Unfortunately, having AFib can also make you more likely to suffer from other serious medical problems, such as a stroke. In fact, one report found that “about 10 percent of ischemic strokes are caused by AF,” and that about one third of all strokes can be traced back to AFib. For this reason, regular screening for AFib and similar heart conditions is highly recommended among those aged 65 or older.
What to Expect From an AFib Screening
Fortunately, AFib is easy to diagnose; it requires is a simple heart rhythm screening with your doctor. Depending on your specific symptoms (if any) and other factors, there may be additional tests ordered by your doctor as well. For example, an electrocardiogram machine may be used to assess your heart rhythm, and other tests may be recommended to confirm a diagnosis, such as:
- Chest X-rays
- Stress tests
- Blood tests
Your doctor should be able to determine during your screening if you have AFib or another heart rhythm condition. From there, a customized treatment plan can be decided on to minimize your health risks and manage the condition.
How a Screening Can Lower Your Stroke Risk
Having an AFib screening can lower your risk of suffering from a stroke through prevention. Because many strokes are directly caused by AFib, treatment of the condition can significantly lower your overall risk of stroke. Many treatments for AFib are able to successfully regulate the heartbeat, including catheter ablation.
